Websites continue to evolve and that is no different to our website, you need to move with the times otherwise there is a chance that you could left behind.
Our website has recently gone through a series of upgrades to keep it looking fresh and up-to-date. Have a look around and leave any comments on the new updates below - we will then be able to tailor future developments to you, the user.
Many of the updates we have initiated include a different contrast level on all text. This will allow people with poor sight to see the website that little bit better. But the real gem of an addition for people with sight problems is the little buttons at the top of page.
The new buttons allow people with various sight problems to still gain the information they need from the site. We have set up text only, high contrast text only, big text and bigger text buttons that will allow the site to be viewed by most people.
The buttons strip away the graphical nature of the site so that the text comes up in various different colour schemes to suit the user, allowing them to get the fl information they need.
We have also changed the colouring of the 'I'm an Employer' section to match the Somerset Centre for Enterprise Brand. This is us being a little marketing geeky as we like all the different brands - ie. Further Education, University Courses and the Somerset Centre for Enterprise - to have their own distinct brands.
The News page is also a lot easier to browse, with a paginated search facility available by month. Instead of having endless news releases all on one page, you are able to search by month for the release. This is much easier as it allows you to quickly find what you are looking for.
Now the really exciting part - well ok, for me anyway! - you are able to send news, courses or events onto your mates, how cool is that! If you feel a friend is interested in, for example, a news story, put their email address and yours in the box with their name and any comment and we will send it to them for you.
Another new part of the site which is really exciting is online registration for events. At the bottom of some events there is a box that allows you to sign up to the event. Once you are signed up to the event, you are guaranteed a place, so there is no hassle to phone the College, post off your menu requirements and wait for a reply, it is all done, instantly!
At the bottom of the site there are three new buttons all linked to the College's new social media sites.
You too can become a fan of Somerset College!
The College's Facebook page is a place where students can come together and discuss issues, a bit like the blog really. They can also upload any images or videos they have of college life, events that have happened or they can publicise college events.
The You Tube and Flickr sites are our way of sharing images and videos of college events. In Flickr you will find photo's of key events that have happened in the College, or photo's of student success. For example, pictures of the summer shows, Freshers Week and Hilary Wells and Victoria Griffiths gold medal winning performance at Euroskills have all been uploaded.
You Tube allows us to show off college videos, here you will find clips of key events that have happened in the College. The most recent video uploaded is of the graduation ceremony that took place a month or so ago.
You can subscribe to the You Tube channel, or become a contact through Flickr. Once you have done that you will be able to be kept up-to-date with any future developments at Somerset College as soon as it happens.
This really is an exciting time to be at Somerset College, with developments happening all the time on the website to make your experience of the site that much more interactive.
If you have any comments, do leave them in the box below - good or bad - and we will be able to tailor any further developments to you.
