From Engineering Apprentice to Director
“I’ve been working at the College for about ten years, but although I work in Human Resources, I didn’t take the expected route into personnel.
Ironically, while at school, I didn’t want to work in an office, I wanted to do something practical and earn some money. I was really lucky to have an excellent careers advisor who talked me through my options. He advised me to pursue an apprenticeship and I managed to find a place at the BMW Group in Swindon as an engineering apprentice. It was the perfect solution; I wasn’t in an office, it was practical, challenging, and I was learning and earning at the same time.
"I Started Teaching and Training Apprentices"
BMW was a really good environment and I worked as an electrician for about eight years after completing my studies. I remember
standing in a boiler room one day, smelling of oil and coming to the conclusion that although I was happy, I didn’t want to be an electrician for the rest of my life. I started teaching and training apprentices within BMW before securing a position as Training Officer. For three years I taught health and safety, electrical engineering and basic engineering before being contacted by a colleague who offered me a post in personnel.
I started in human resources in 1997. During that time I’ve worked in manufacturing, the NHS and am now in the education sector, climbing the career ladder to Director level. I’m very passionate about education and care about people, so am delighted to be involved in the industry.
More than just Professional Skills
I’d recommend the apprenticeship route for many reasons. Your college studies are reinforced by practical, hands-on skills learned on the job, and you earn a salary. In addition, you develop life and interpersonal skills, which stand you in good stead for the rest of your career”.
