Somerset College celebrates Pearson Teaching Award Winners
At 1pm this afternoon, Friday 17 June 2016, it has been announced that the Computing and Games Team at Somerset College, has won a Silver Teaching Award Winner, in the Award for Further Education Team of the Year, and Stephen Fletcher, Computing Lecturer and Advanced Practitioner, has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the FE Lecturer of the Year category.
The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching, founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam; they recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach. The awards were presented to the Computing and Games Team, and to Stephen, as part of celebrations across England, Ireland and Wales on ‘Thank a Teacher Day’.
Competing Against Thousands of Nominations
The Computing and Games Team was selected from thousands of nominations as one of the winners of the prestigious Silver Pearson Teaching Awards that are presented to outstanding local heroes of education. They have been described as ”an inspiring and highly motivated team who energise one another – are strong individually, but formidable as a whole”.
They have excelled through developing diverse and innovative delivery methods, such as “build a computer against the clock”, inspired by the ‘Mission Impossible’ theme tune, or creating three dimensional models of gaming consoles. Examples of how the team design, develop and deliver an engaging and highly successful curriculum model.
"A True Ambassador for Further Education"
Stephen is part of the Somerset College Computing and Games team, and has been described as being “totally student focussed and not only a shining example of success from a Further Education background, but also a true ambassador for Further Education. He gives real thought to how he delivers in the classroom, how he can challenge, motivate and inspire in tutorial sessions and how he can share good practice across the college”.
Everyone at Somerset College is delighted that they have been recognised in these national awards, their success is thoroughly deserved.
