Who is this course for?

If you have been out of education for a while and would like to gain access to a university level qualification such as a degree, an Access course may be the best way forward for you.

Description

Access courses are equivalent to two A levels and give you access to university level courses.  Additional GCSE Maths, English or Science classes may be available. For access to higher level courses in Health Studies and a career in health.

Teaching and Assessment

You will study a range of units in all of your subjects and your work will be assessed throughout the course. Successful completion of each unit will give you Access ‘Credits'. You need to accumulate at least 60 credits to be awarded full access certification. There will be exams in some of the subjects.

This course will give you a practical and academic grounding for a range of health related careers including: Midwifery, Podietry, Nurition, Diatetics and operating department practice

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however, it is important that you have developed skills in written English.

If you have not already achieved GCSE English at grade C it is sometimes possible to study this alongside your Access programme.  It may be necessary in some cases for applicants to complete a short comprehension exercise to demonstrate their abiliities in written English.

Costs

If you are 24 years of age or older, then in most cases you will be eligible to receive an advanced learning loan from the student loan company to pay your fees.

The government has recently announced that access learners who then go on to successfully complete a higher education course will have this debt cancelled.

If you are under 24 years of age and do not hold a level 3 qualification already, there will usually be no tuition fee to pay.

If you are under 24 years of age but you do hold a level 3 qualification, the normal tuition fee is £1500.  This can be divided into instalments upon request.
