If you have been out of education for a while and would like to gain access to a university level qualification such as a degree, an Access course may be the best way forward for you.
Access courses are equivalent to two A levels and allow access to university level courses. Our Access courses are designed to fit around a busy family or work life. Additional GCSE Maths, English and Science classes are available and Level 2 numeracy and literacy sessions can also be arranged.
If you want to teach, write or progress to a humanities degree this course can help you on your way. The Literature element covers Poetry, Prose, Fiction, Shakespeare, Drama other than Shakespeare and a unit on a book you choose for yourself. You will also study books from a wide range of periods. You will develop your skills of analysis, evaluation and writing. You will write an essay for each of the five modules.
The history element covers an introduction to the methodology of history, the range of sources and their uses for historians. If you follow history as your main subject you will have the opportunity to conduct a piece of research into a topic of your choice.
You will study a range of units in all of your subjects and your work will be assessed throughout the course. Successful completion of each unit gives you access 'credits'. You need to accumulate at least 60 credits to achieve full access certification. There will be exams in some of the subjects.
There are no formal entry requirements, however, it is important that you have developed skills in written English.
If you have not already achieved GCSE English at grade C it is usually possible to study this alongside your Access programme. It may be necessary in some cases for applicants to complete a short comprehension exercise to demonstrate their abiliities in written English.
