Teaching and Assessment

The IMI course is assessed by online assessments, College-based assignments and short answer tests. The NVQ at Level 2 or 3 will be assessed by demonstration of practical competence in a variety of relevant tasks, a portfolio which will be up to a national standard plus responses to technical questions to measure your understanding of light vehicle maintenance and repair work.

Career Opportunities

Employment as a Motor Vehicle Mechanical Technician, trainee Service Receptionist/Engineer in vehicle mechanical specialisms, trainee Vehicle Mechanical Repair Insurance or perhaps an Estimator.

You could progress onto our Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) or Foundation Degree Engineering (Automotive).

Entry Requirements

College entrants will be 16 years of age and over and have at least four GCSEs at grade E or above plus a College interview and initial assessment.

You will need an employer to sponsor you. This process needs to start as soon as you feel you want to become a mechanic. Often the offer of an apprenticeship comes from work experience or voluntary work, so always be on the look-out for opportunities. We can help you to find placements and can also transfer you to an apprenticeship from a full-time programme at any time.
