The BA (Hons) Design (Fashion Textiles) course is for those who want to build appropriate skills and develop their talent for the demanding and ever changing fashion textile industry. It is a hands-on course which explores the fundamentals of design with the aim of combining various techniques to create innovative textiles which dictate the fashioning of materials on the body.
The first stage of the course is diagnostic where you are able to try parrallel Textiles, Fashion and Surface Design Modules. Stage two is professional and business based with work experience opportunities, live briefs, national competition and industrial in-put. The final year we encourage individual and independant study where you write your own brief to produce a strong exhibition and statement of your personal strengths.
During the course you will: • Gain a thorough insight into many aspects of textile development including printing, embroidery and embellishment, dyeing and mixed media textiles. • Be encouraged to push the boundaries of how textiles are created and used on the body. • Develop complementary skills in pattern cutting, draping on the stand and garment construction so you have an understanding of how materials work on the body. • Work on live projects and have the opportunity to take up work placements that will give you first-hand experience of the industry. • Develop digital design skills. You will be able to access our digital workshop which includes equipment for laser cutting, embroidery and fabric printing as well as the print room and sewing room facilities. You will use photoshop and illustrator programmes for visual communications. • Have your own work and display space in spacious, well-equipped studios. • Be encouraged to enter competitions. • Complete a visual culture module that will underpin your studio work. • Enjoy study trips abroad and visits to trade fairs and exhibitions. • Focus on your own personal design statement in your final year, which will culminate in your collection being shown at the Somerset College Degree Show. You may also have the opportunity to show your designs during exhibitions in London. One of our students was awarded Young Designer of the Year at Clothes Show Live and another the Visionary Footwear Award.
