The BA (Hons) Design (Surface Design) course is for those who have a flair for colour, image and pattern and would like to improve the appearance of the spaces we live and work in. You will learn cutting edge techniques from tables to exterior walls. Surface Design allows you to explore large scale and diverse materials through a wide range of technical processes. Many of our projects have industry connections and you will work on briefs which teach you sales and business skills as well as sustainable and ethical thinking.
You are introduced to a range of surface design applications for interior and exterior as well as decorative giftware and product areas which naturally link the disciplines of textiles, graphics and product design. There is a designer maker or designer for industry route within the programme, both of which encourage individuality and creativity throughout.
In your first year you can choose to experiment with surface design and interior textile techniques and consider how textiles are used in fashion as well as interior design before committing to a specialism in your second and third years.
During this course you will: • Develop print and digital design, the practical techniques of drawing and multimedia. • Gain a growing familiarity with the idiosyncrasies of materials such as fabric, metal, wire, glass, paper and plastics. • Consider surface design in relation to products and merchandise, graphic layouts and packaging as well as interior space. • Create and apply imagery to surfaces in environments as diverse as exterior paving, domestic kitchens and surfboards. • Develop the skills you need to bring alive both hard and soft surfaces in 2D and 3D using new and smart materials. • Undertake a number of site specific briefs supplied by our contacts in the industry. • Be encouraged to enter competitions including those sponsored by the Royal Society for the Arts and the Chartered Society of Designers. • Have your own work and display space in spacious, well-equipped studios. • Be able to access our digital workshop which includes equipment for laser cutting, embroidery and fabric printing as well as print room and sewing room facilities. • Complete a visual culture module that will underpin your studio work. • Focus on creating your own personal design statement in your final year which will culminate in your collection being shown at the Somerset College Degree Show and the opportunity of being exhibited in London at New Designers - a well established launch pad for many designers' careers.
During the course you will benefit from a range of visiting speakers from companies which have included including Dalsouple UK Ltd, Designers Guild, Ian Logan Design Company, Janet Stoyel, Guild of Devon Craftsmen, Axminster Carpets, Sharon Marston Design, Loren Morairty and Tracy Kendall.
