An Advanced Diploma is equivalent in size and value to three and a half A Levels. The Advanced Diploma in Engineering is a practical, challenging and career-focused alternative to A Levels.
Students completing an Advanced Diploma in Engineering will be able to dedicate a similar amount of time to study maths and science as those students who complete a maths A Level and a science A Level, with the advantage that a Diploma student will learn how to apply maths and science to engineering. As well as understanding the theory behind engineering, you will learn practical skills and develop an ability to solve problems both individually and as part of a team.
The programme is made up of units which develop knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the broad range of engineering disciplines, using realistic contexts and leading-edge materials.
The Principal Learning comprises 9 units of study:
The activities you will take part in have been designed to develop your personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS) and the application of the Functional Skills of Maths, English and IT at Level 2. You will also undertake a personal project.
The whole Diploma package will also include another Level 3 course that can be studied alongside the Diploma.
At least 10 days work experience forms an essential part of this course.
Learning will be brought to life through exploring how engineering is applied in different areas of work and life. The Diploma is a great new way of combining class work with hands-on experience. This qualification allows lots of opportunity to come into contact with people who are employed in this industry. You will learn how to work with other people and express yourself confidently in a work environment by developing personal, learning and thinking skills. A key aspect throughout the Diploma is the need to plan your actions and set personal targets for achievement.
Each unit of the Advanced Diploma is assessed through assignments which reflect the aim of each unit. Two units will be externally assessed.
The Engineering Advanced Diploma enables learners to progress to employment within the engineering sector and related industries. The qualification will also provide opportunities for progression to a range of university courses and Apprenticeships.
It is expected that Advanced Diploma students will have attained 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (including Maths and English), or an equivalent Level 2 qualification.
