The BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction is a level 3 gateway qualification for all students who wish to pursue a professional career in areas such as architecture, surveying, and management. It is equivalent to 3 vocational A levels and is an established entry qualification for those wishing to go to university. It is also a recognised industry benchmark qualification for those seeking employment as a technician after completion of the course.
Present and past students have enhanced their career prospects by completing this qualification whilst being in part-time employment within the construction sector. The Professions team at Somerset College have strong industry links to assist any future student wishing to take this opportunity.
This is a two year full-time course, with attendance normally required on a Monday, Tuesday, and a Wednesday running over 36 weeks from September to July in each year.
The course covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in both the construction and civil engineering sectors. It is an 18 unit qualification, comprising 6 core subjects and 12 specialist /optional subjects, with some of the first year subjects being:
There are no external examinations and the subjects are assessed through a series of internally set assignments involving a combination of scenario based tasks linked to project work, practical exercises, individual study and presentations. Your award can be achieved at a pass, merit or distinction level depending upon your performance in each subject.
If you are under 19 years you will also work towards a Key Skill in Information Technology, Communication or Application of Number, all of which are important for progression within the Construction Industry.

An equipment list will be sent out prior to the course starting. Basic equipment will include steel toe capped safety boots or shoes. This course is subject to a vocational resource fee which is payable upon enrolment. Occasionally you may be offered the opportunity to take part in an educational visit for which a contribution may be required.
