The aim of the course is to enable you to build the best possible portfolio of work either to support applications for university study or to develop your arts practice further for personal or vocational reasons. This is an exciting and challenging programme that will enable you to develop your creative potential to the full.
For most students the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is the first time they have had the opportunity to explore art, design and the creative processes on a full-time basis. You will be encouraged to adopt a highly experimental attitude, which is designed to build your confidence, increase your practical skills and challenge the way you think about art. The aim is to develop the individual and to determine the direction you want to take as an artist or designer.
As the first term progresses you will start to become more aware of your personal preferences, which will then be further developed in the second and third terms. This is usually identified through an interest in fine art or photography or the design disciplines of graphic design, 3D or product design, fashion design or textile design. The curriculum is delivered through broad based project work and workshops in IT, photography and printmaking in the first term and specialist projects in the second and third terms.
You will have your own workspace and will be taught together in a large studio area. Lecturers are specialists in their subjects and will work closely with you throughout the year.
During the year students are offered two residential trips in the UK and abroad, plus day trips as appropriate to see things first hand.
Practical and written assignments, continuous assessment and external moderation. Your progress is monitored through tutorials and seminars.
This course has been designed for you to build the best possible portfolio of work during the year to support your application to university. The majority of students progress onto Honours Degree programmes many of whom choose to study at Somerset College.
You must be aged 17 or above. You will need four GCSEs at grades C or above plus AS/A Level Art (preferable but not essential) or a National Diploma qualification and a portfolio of work. Students will be considered without these qualifications but evidence of creative interest would need to be demonstrated.
