Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for people who are considering work within Health and Social Care sectors or have already decided on a career in one of these areas

Description

The course will prepare you for employment or further training of studies

The following units will be covered:
Creative and therapeutic activities,
Communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors,
Anatomy and physiology for health and social care,
The impact of diet on health,
Human lifespan development,
Individual needs within the health and social care sectors,
Vocational experience in a health and social care setting.   

The course includes work experience opportunities and placements.

You will also take a Functional Skills Qualification.

Teaching and Assessment

There are assignments for each unit studied plus practical assignments related to your practical work and work experience.

Career Opportunities

Employment include Care Assistant, Community Care Assistant working with elderly people or people with physical or learning difficulties or perhaps a Health Care Assistant.

If you stay on at Somerset College you could progress onto the Level 3 Health and Social Care or Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning and Development or a National/Extended Diploma in another vocational area.

 

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE passes at grade D or above including English Language (Written) or an appropriate level 1 qualification with GCSE English Language (Written) D or above / Functional Skills English Level 1. Students must be between 16-19 years old.

You will need to provide evidence that you have experience working with children or adults in a caring capacity this may include baby sitting or voluntary work.

A CRB check is required.

A successful selection interview is necessary.

This course may involve regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults (also known as regulated activity).

All students applying for this course will be legally required to register with the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) which is administered by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). The ISA has been established as a single agency to monitor all individuals who want to work or volunteer with vulnerable people. From the 6th of April 2011the fee for an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be £44. The College will send further instructions on applying for your CRB as part of the admissions process.
