The National Diploma in Games Development is aimed at those students interested in designing and developing computer games.
You will study four core units:
• Understanding the media
• Research techniques
• Media skills workshop
• Professional practice in the media industry
Plus four specialist units:
• Production management
• Professional brief
• Digital graphics
• Games platforms and technologies
And you will study a further ten specialist units from this list:
• Games design
• Games engines
• Sound for games
• 3D animation
• 3D environments
• Multimedia practices
• Video in multimedia
• Human computer interfaces
• Narrative image making
• Motional graphics and video
Throughout the course you will develop Functional Skills.
Students have visited Barcelona and attended the Computer Vision Centre at Barcelona University. The cost of trips varies - the Barcelona trip was approximately £300.
A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used including computer based projects, case studies, tutorials and classroom sessions. Assignments will be used for assessment purposes.
Further study onto a Foundation Degree in Multimedia and Internet Technologies, Enterprise in Computer Game Technology or Computing offered here at Somerset College.
Alternatively you could find employment in Games design, Games development or Animation and 3D design.
Four GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which must be Mathematics, or a merit at First Diploma in a related subject area or an intermediate GNVQ in a related area.
