This course is designed to provide studies in the fields of computing which are directly relevant to the changing needs of employees and employers. It also provides an education that forms a basis for progression to university level study. You will develop an essential range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes.
You will study seven specialist units including:
• IT project
• Maintaining computer systems
• IT technical support
• Network management
• Networking systems security
• IT essentials - Cisco
• IT troubleshooting and repair
• Networking essentials - Cisco IT essentials 2
Throughout this course you will develop Functional Skills. There is an opportunity to participate in residentials - students have recently visited Euro Disney on an IT study experience where they attended seminars given by Disney personnel on subjects such as networking, electronic booking systems and control systems.
Students have also visited New York and attended seminars by Apple and the
company that manage the subway system.
The cost of trips do vary, the Disney trip cost approximately £140 and the New York trip
was around £550.
A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used including computer-based projects, case studies, tutorials and classroom sessions. Assignments will be used for assessment purposes.
Further study onto a Foundation or Honours Degree course here at Somerset College in Computing or Multimedia with Internet Technologies.
ICT Support and Networking are a couple of employment areas you could move into.
4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Mathematics or a merit First Diploma in Computing (ICT Practitioners) or an intermediate GNVQ in ICT.
