Who is this course for?

These courses offer learners aged 16-21 with learning difficulties or behavioural difficulties the chance to develop skills required in the workplace and for living independently.

Learners are challenged, with high expectations in terms of 100% attendance and appropriate behaviour in all settings. There is a lot of fun, trips and a residential with learners engaged in their own learning and planning for their own future.

Description

This one year entry level course prepares young adults with learning disabilities for independent living. We will support learners in a journey of personal development through practical learning in a range of activities including gardening, cooking and life skills. Students will develop Maths, English and Computer skills for living. All learners will be expected to attend a regular tutorial. The course helps people develop their confidence and gain skills to live as independently as possible within their community. Young adults who are successful on this programme may progress to the college Preparation for Working Life programme or into supported employment/education opportunities with other organisations.

Personal Skills

A willingness to learn, and overcome previous negative experiences.

Teaching and Assessment

Learners will study to gain awards in Life Skills and Independent Living through the development of portfolios and practical activities

Career Opportunities

Within the individualised programme each learner will have the opportunities to progress up one level and in some cases up two levels, providing behaviour and attendance are good and there is evidence of success through qualifications at the end of the academic year. Some learners may over a two year period progress from Entry 1 to Entry 3, while other learners move from Entry 3 to a Level 1 course. Each learner and each year is taken one step at a time and acceptance on a one year programme may not lead to a higher level course or a second year. Ultimately progression should be to employment and/or independent living.

Entry Requirements

Acceptance on the course is dependent on learning readiness and the ability to learn and behave in a large and exciting College environment. The course is open to young people aged 16-21.
