Who is this course for?

The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Construction is a professional qualification providing career development opportunities for those already in employment within the industry and is a 'top up' of the National Award in Construction.  The programme is equally suited to mature learners or new starters in the industry who will progress to the Higher National Certificate in Construction.

Description

This is a one year part-time day release course, normally held on a Tuesday from 9 am to 8 pm running over 36 weeks from September to July.

 

The course covers some of the key knowledge and practical skills required in the construction sector.  It is a 6 unit 'top up' qualification, comprising 2 core subjects and 4 specialist subjects, namely:

  • Building Technology in Construction
  • Building Surveying in Construction
  • Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Planning, Organisation and Control of Resources in Construction
  • Environmental Science in Construction
  • ICT and CAD in Construction and the Built Environment

Teaching and Assessment

There are no external examinations and the subjects are assessed through a series of internally set assignments involving a combination of scenario based tasks linked to project work, practical exercises, timed tasks, individual study and presentations.  Your award can be achieved at a pass, merit or distinction level depending upon your performance in each subject.

Entry Requirements

With varied learner backgrounds there is no one specific entry requirement but it is expected that typical entry qualifications would include at least one of the following:

  • A National Award in Construction
  • An Intermediate GNVQ in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Other appropriate qualifications
  • Relevant work experience

 

All applicants will be considered on individual merit and interviewed to ensure they have the potential to achieve this qualification.

Costs

Tuition Fees: on enquiry

An equipment list will be sent out prior to the course starting.  Basic equipment will include steel toe capped safety boots or shoes.  This course is subject to a vocational resource fee which is payable upon enrolment.  Occasionally you may be offered the opportunity to take part in an educational visit for which a contribution may be required.
