If you’d like to study for a degree but have little recent experience in education, an Access to Higher Education Diploma is a good place to start. It enables you to get back into the learning groove, and is specifically designed to accommodate adults who have decided to return to learning.

An Access Diploma is a well-established qualification that demonstrates your abilities as a learner, and your potential to achieve success on a degree programme. It will enable you to be accepted for entry at any UK university or Higher Education college.

During your Access Diploma, you will gain study skills, subject knowledge and confidence to progress to a Foundation or Honours Degree programme either at the University Centre Somerset or at another academic institution. We will support you every step of the way as you rediscover your passion for education

Because we know that your life is busy, our Access programme is requires two days attendance per week and is designed to fit around childcare responsibilities and part-time working. That means you can continue living your life to the full, while completing a one-year course that will open up a whole new world of possibility for your future career.

    Awarding body: CAVA examination board

  • Teaching and Assessment

You will study a range of units in all of your subjects and your work will be assessed throughout the course. Successful completion of each unit will give you Access 'Credits'. You need to accumulate 60 credits to be awarded full access certification. There will be exams in some of the subjects.

The course will give you a practical and academic ground for a range of careers including:

    • Business Management
    • Finance
    • Human Resources
    • Marketing
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Games Technology
    • Computer System/Networks
  • Progression Opportunities

On completion of the course, students can choose to study a range of degrees including FdA Business Management, FdSc Computer Games Technology or FdSc Computing & Internet Technologies.

  • Entry Requirements

To complete this Access course in one academic year (September – July), you must have achieved GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade A-C and be able to demonstrate this by presenting your certificate or awarding body results record at interview. If you have lost both of these documents, you can contact your examination board and they can usually provide you with replacements, although there will be a cost involved.

Specific entry requirements vary per pathway and will be discussed at your interview, but motivation and a commitment to completing the course are essential to success. You must be aged 19 or older to apply.

If you are between 19 and 23 when you start the programme and this is your first qualification at this level, you will not be charged course fees.

  • Costs

If you are aged 19 years or older and do not already hold a Level 3 qualification or equivalent then you may be exempt from the course fees.

If you are 19 years or older and already hold a full Level 3 qualification or equivalent then you will need to pay the course fees in full.
