  • Who is this course for?

    In partnership with Oxford Brookes University, Bridgwater & Taunton College offers the level 6 BSc (Hons) Top-up in Countryside Management. This provides an ideal progression route for those completing study of the Foundation Degree whether at Bridgwater & Taunton College or elsewhere in the country. It is designed to provide more specialist expertise for those already working in countryside management or in environmental conservation. For those already working in the industry it is an ideal opportunity to expand your knowledge to enhance career prospects.

  • Course Description

    During the top-up year you will study:

    • Sustainable Environmental Management
    • Visitor Management and Education
    • Aquatic Conservation and Management
    • Ecological Survey techniques
    • Dissertation

    • Animal Conservation and Biodiversity

    You will be required to attend timetabled lectures, seminars and practical sessions; modules require self-study appropriate to the level. Guest speakers from a variety of conservation organisations will deliver workshops and presentations to provide you with an industry perspective and support modules.

    As well as studying in college, much of your learning experience will take place off-site gaining actual experience with all our local wildlife and countryside partners ensuring a first-hand experience of the subject. Relevant field trips will also form an essential part of the learning experience. You will in your dissertation be able to choose a topic to research alongside one of our partners.

     

    What makes this course special?

    • The outstanding resources available on site at Cannington include a nature reserve and wetlands area. Close by is the newly-created Steart Marshes Project which you will become involved in alongside many other of our external partners across Somerset
    • Staff teaching on the course are well qualified to do so. All staff are qualified to at least Honours degree level and have relevant industry experience
    • The qualification has been designed in collaboration with the industry ensuring that you will develop the necessary skills and knowledge needed for employment

     

    How long is the course?

    One year full-time with attendance for two days a week.

  • Teaching and Assessment

    Units are assessed using 100% coursework or a combination of 40% examinations and 60% coursework. Coursework elements include written reports, poster work and oral presentations.

    You will be required to attend timetabled lectures, seminars and practical sessions; modules require self-study appropriate to the level. Guest speakers from a variety of conservation organisations will deliver workshops and presentations to provide you with an industry perspective and support modules.

  • Progression Opportunities

    On successful completion of the BSc (Hons) top-up degree in Countryside Management at University Centre Someset, you have the option of entering employment, further academic study for a Masters Degree or PhD, and combination thereof.

  • Career Progression

    This course could help you gain employment within a variety of countryside and conservation bodies, wildlife organisations, education roles and voluntary bodies. Previous students have gained employment in both private and public sectors of the countryside and conservation areas outlined, and in addition some have set up as self-employed individuals.

  • Entry Requirements

    • You will require a HND or Foundation Degree in a related subject and at least 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including Maths and English or Level 2 equivalent
    • Mature applicants with relevant experience who do not have the stated entry requirements are encouraged to apply
    • External applicants welcome where progression from Foundation Degree to higher level at another college/university is not available there
