Stormwater Attenuation

Event Date: 08 June 2010
Time: 09:30 - 15:30

This event will provide attendees with good working knowledge of:

  • likely climate change scenarios for the South West and their impacts
  • a working knowledge of the regulatory measures and best practice guidance associated with the built environment
  • the most commonly adopted methods of water attenuation and storage
  • the logic behind their adoption over more traditional stormwater systems
  • their individual pros and cons and the pros and cons of implementing systems in combination.

Speakers for the day:

Rebecca Eastman – Climate South West

Rebecca will set the context for the day by setting out climate change projections for the South West region and the likely implications for housing and the built environment

Ken Tatem – Environment Agency

Ken will be focusing on recent flood events leading to the Pitt report and the agency view relative to legislation and guidance. Documents considered will include

  • Making Space for Water
  • Floods Directive
  • Pitt report
  • CFMPs
  • PPS25
  • Surface Water Management Plans – Guidance & examples
  • Flood and Water Act – New responsibilities

TBC – Insurance Industry

This presentation will be focussed on reports and guidance issued by the Association of British Insurers around the need to develop guidance and standards designed to promote confidence in the ability of buildings to adapt to future climate

Robert Bray – Robert Bray Associates

Robert will draw upon his vast experience in delivering high quality, successful Sustainable Urban Drainage schemes (SUDs) to present a picture of what the adoption of best practice in design looks like and why, along with a view on the successful integration of SUDs with other attenuation solutions.

Alun Tarr – Wildface

Alun has strong views on the design and delivery of green roofs. However, these views are linked to a practical understanding of the industry, the working environment and potential liabilities. As a scientist, Alun has a keen interest in the quantification of the benefits that can accrue from Green Roofs, in particular the complex and often misrepresented relationship between roof planting and storm water attenuation

Marcus Bicknell – RainWater Harvesting Limited

Marcus will present an overview of the role of rainwater harvesting systems in Stormwater attenuation and their compatibility with green roofs and SUDs to form part of an integrated solution.
