Ubuntu is an African word originating from the Bantu dialect in Africa and literally means humanity to others, or ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’.
Ubuntu Week runs from 19-22 October at the College and aims to celebrate the spirit of Africa and raise awareness about Black History and the incredible achievements of many great black historical figures such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.
There will be many participatory activities for staff and students during the week as follows:
Monday 19th October
- Opening Prayers with Isadora Obi, student Priest from Ghana in the Atrium - 12pm
- Songs from Around the World - Performing Arts Students in the Atrium - 12pm
- Ubuntu - Fiona Gaffa - An introduction and explanation in the Atrium - 12pm
- Djembe African Drum Demonstration in the Canteen - 12.30pm
- Exotic Food Stall - Gloria Lawrence in the Canteen - 12pm
- Africa Calling - learn to sing and have your voice recorded - Gloria Lawrence - drop in session - Lecture Theatre B 2-4pm
Tuesday 20th October
- Artist Cafe Conversation - James Lake, disabled artist in residence - FE Common Room - 10-12pm and HE Common Room - 2-4pm
- Leburn Maddox - Guitar Workshop in the Canteen - 12pm. An interactive and participative workshops on playing the guitar. Leburn lives locally in Apply Somerset but is famous in his own right and spent years sharing bills with world famous artists such as Chaka Khan, Patti La Belle, Lionel Ritchie, Mr Bill Withers, Kool & the Gang, Mother's Finest, Gil Scott Heron, Cameo, LTD, Rose Royce, Tavares, Chic, KC & The Sunshine Band and even the amazing Larry Graham of Sly & the Family Stone fame.
Wednesday 21st October
- HBKFinn and the Drovers Street Band - Canteen - 12pm
Thursday 22nd October
- Dance by Performing Arts Students - The Atrium - 12pm
- DJ Finn - canteen - 12.30pm - selection of world music and chart hits
