2007 Graduation Ceremony

A century of firsts in five years

Somerset College students have achieved nearly a century of firsts and distinctions in their degree level courses during the past five years.

Ninety-eight students have achieved firsts or distinctions as they graduated from the College during the past five years.

Rachel Davies, Principal of Somerset College, said: ‘For a college of our size that is a phenomenal number of firsts and distinctions. I am really proud of the degree classifications attained by our students during their time here.'

Hanna Davies, who graduated in 2002 with a first in BA (Hons) Design (Fashion), said: ‘I found the first really helped me to get employment after I graduated. I felt my application form went to the top of the pile as it showed I was hard working and dedicated. My first gave me a much bigger opportunity and enabled me to apply for many more jobs.

‘I really enjoyed my time at Somerset College, the tutors were great and the course fantastic. I now work for a handbag designer in London, and wouldn't have got here without my qualification from the College.'

Hanna now works for Susannah Hunter, a handbag designer in London whose bags have a dedicated following including Uma Thurman and Nicole Kidman.

Somerset College offer 44 degree courses including full BA (Hons) courses as well as Foundation Degree courses. The courses are offered through a partnership with the University of Plymouth as the College is part of the University of Plymouth Colleges Faculty.

Rachel Davies said: ‘Students complete their course at Somerset College, but come out of the course with a degree from the University of Plymouth. The University of Plymouth is one of the top ten universities in the country for Arts and Design, so their degrees carry immense weight in industry.'

Somerset College has spaces on degree level courses available through the clearing system. If students didn't receive the grades they were expecting they can contact the clearing hotline on 01823 366 331 and apply for their course at the College.
