Fashion stars mix with celebrities for a day

Somerset College fashion undergraduates were mixing with celebrities in the VIP room at Clothes Show Live as they were short-listed for the Young Designer of the Year final.

The competition was presented by fashionista Louise Roe and DJ and TV personality Vernon Kaye, and included a performance by the Saturdays. The competitors were introduced by Erin O'Conner, supermodel who recently appeared in the Marks & Spencer's advertising campaign.

The competition showcased rising talent in the UK's universities and included students from fashion heavyweights such as the London College of Fashion

BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles undergraduates Fabia Zanchi from Yeovil, Sophie Phillips from Torrington, Carys Pitcher from Plymouth and BA (Hons) Fashion student Victoria Griffiths from Abergavenny were all short-listed in the final ten.

Carys said: ‘I was a little overawed as I walked into the VIP room, but we went through a dress rehearsal and I started to settle down. I certainly won't forget this day in a long time.'

Richard Mannion, Fashion Textiles Tutor at Somerset College, said: ‘This just goes to show how strong the course is. These four undergraduates have beaten off thousands of other entries to be listed in the top ten. It is a remarkable achievement.

‘Budding fashion undergraduates from across the country are able to enter this competition, I am so proud of their achievements. Clothes Show Live is a major competition in the UK fashion industry.'

Fabia said: ‘I was so pleased to see my dress go down the main Fashion Catwalk at Clothes Show Live. We were up against some stiff competition, but we can take heart that we beat many thousands of stars of the future to even get this far. I am now looking forward to Graduate Fashion Week and building my collection for that catwalk show.'

Somerset College had a stand at the show where they were able to talk to potential students.

Richard said: ‘Clothes Show Live and Graduate Fashion Week serve as perfect opportunities to show potential students how successful we have been. We handed out goody bags and course information to many possible students.'
