Fashion undergraduates celebrate yet more success

The Fashion division at Somerset College is celebrating more success as two further undergraduates have been shortlisted for national awards.

Richard Maynes, from Stourbridge, and Paula Fisher, from Langport, have been shortlisted for the Fashion Awareness Direct and the Bridal Buyer Direct Awards respectively and will see their designs displayed at national events.

To be shortlisted Paula has designed a wedding dress which she will have to make to win it. She is being assisted by nationally recognised bridal designer Ian Stuart to meet the high demands of the judges.

Paula's designs will be shown at the National Bridal Exhibition in Harrogate in March where the winner will be announced.

Paula said: ‘I am so proud to be shortlisted for this award. Bridal wear is different to my preferred style of couture wear made from sheepskin, so this has been a challenge but good fun.'

Richard has designed a futuristic capsule collection and will be in with a chance of winning £2,000. His design will be shown at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout during the prestigious London Fashion Week.

Richard said: ‘I cannot believe that my garments will be shown as part of London Fashion Week. It will be an amazing feeling to know that many thousands of people will get to see them, I am really looking forward to it.'

Both BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles undergraduates were required to submit designs for garments as part of the competition. To win the top prize they will now have to make their designs.

Gary Mills, Fashion Lecturer at Somerset College, said: ‘We have had a really successful year at Somerset College with many undergraduates shortlisted and winning competitions. Richard and Paula have worked extremely hard to achieve this and our fingers are crossed that they will win the awards.'

Richard has been shortlisted in the final three to represent the UK at World Skills in Canada in 2009. Four further undergraduates were recently shortlisted for the Young Designer of the Year Final at Clothes Show Live, and Hilary Wells and Victoria Griffiths also won a gold medal at EuroSkills in Rotterdam.
