A meal fit for a prince was prepared by catering students and lecturers at Somerset College in Taunton today, (Friday Dec 9) when they had the honour of catering for His Royal Highness Prince Edward - plus 70 civic guests.
Nine selected first and second year students had the experience of a lifetime as they helped lecturers Lesley Retallack and Becky Tomlinson, both highly experienced caterers, create a royal feast.
They worked late into the previous night and were hard at work first thing in the morning, working as ‘commis chefs’ (helpers) to prepare a mouth watering menu that included the best local produce that Somerset could provide.
“I really enjoyed it. It was very exciting to see Prince Edward, and I helped serve the gateaux we prepared, to all the staff there,” said student Rachel Dauncey (pictured).
The menu included Quantock game terrine with fresh plum chutney, smoked duck breast, whole poached salmon trout, caviar blinis, twice baked Somerset brie, rose cupcakes, brownie fudge pie, plus locally produced soft drinks – including ginger beer (a favourite with the visiting prince).
“We wanted to keep it local and show how proud we are of what Somerset has to offer,” said lecturer Becky Tomlinson. “We sourced whatever we could locally, and it was fantastic for our students, who may never experience something like this again.
“Someone from the Prince’s party told us he’d bitten on a pellet in the game terrine – and he was really pleased, as it showed him it was genuine wild game.”
The menu was agreed by the Palace and as well as lunch, the students also provided afternoon tea and cake.
