Sculptural Book by Michelle Lang

Graduate one of top 50 budding designers in UK

A Somerset College graduate has been recognised as one of the top fifty designers to take part in New Designers, the foremost exhibition of emerging design talent.

Michelle Lang, who has completed BA (Hons) Interior Textiles and Surface Design, has been asked to show her collection of stunning books as part of New Designers Selection where the top fifty designers are chosen to display their designs.

New Designers had a record number of graduates apply for New Designers Selection 2008. Michelle will display her books as part of the London Design Festival between 18-21 September in Shoreditch, London.

Michelle's sculptural books are inspired by architecture from Berlin, Prague and Barcelona. Each book contains drawings, photos, colour and cut-work designs to display the architecture.

Michelle said: ‘I am so shocked to have been selected. It has come around so quickly, there were only a few days between submitting my application and finding out I had been chosen.

‘I am really excited about displaying my collection at New Designer Selection, it will be seen amongst work from some of the top emerging designers in the UK.'

Michelle's project is called ‘A Kaleidoscope of Memories' as the books are a way of expressing memories of travelling to Barcelona, Berlin and Prague in an abstract, snap-shot way.

Michelle said: ‘Ideally, I would love to produce similar books as trend or styling ideas to inspire companies for future interior trends. One of the main compliments I received at my degree show was how interactive they are.

‘A few people mentioned how they make a good talking point, especially the books that had a particular theme.'

Imelda Hughes, Head of Textiles and Fashion at Somerset College, said: ‘This is a fabulous achievement for Michelle, she has a stunning and innovative collection of books.

‘It is a massive tribute for one of Somerset College's students to be chosen to display at New Designers Selection, and goes to show how widely regarded our students are.'

New Designers Selection takes place between 18 and 21 September at the Village Underground, Shoreditch in London.
