'Green' College wins top commendation
Somerset College has won a special commendation for its courses at the annual Green Gown Awards, established to find the UK’s most sustainable universities and colleges.
It won Highly Commended in the Courses category, second only to the London School of Economics.
The award, won in partnership with Plymouth University, was announced at a prestigious gala banquet held at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London recently.
Now in its sixth year, the Awards recognise exceptional initiatives being taken by higher and further education institutions to become more sustainable.
The winning entries were drawn from 191 applications, representing nearly 110 colleges and universities from across the UK. Each had to undergo rigorous assessment involving expert judges from a range of organisations.
The scheme has various categories in which universities and colleges can illustrate both their academic and estates management achievements.
“We were delighted to achieve such a good result and have worked extremely hard with our Higher Education partner the University of Plymouth, to make sure our courses fully reflect the College’s commitment to sustainability,” said Rachel Davies, Principal of Somerset College.
The Green Gown Awards aim to provide wider inspiration and shared learning for the education sector, encouraging institutions towards greater sustainability and improved environmental management.
They are administrated by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC).
