Internship with Rigid Containers

Nicholas Locker completed an Internship organised by Somerset College with Rigid Containers over the Summer.

Rigid Containers are one of the UK and Ireland's largest independent box and container manufacturers, with facilities based in Desborough, Wellington, Northamptonshire, Selby, North Yorkshire and Limerick in Ireland.

We spoke to Caraline Browning from Rigid about Nicholas and his time with them.

Caraline says, "I work in the administration office of Rigid in Wellington, also dealing with elements of Human Resources and training of which I have extensive experience.

One of the most important things to the company is looking after our employees and also giving young people the opportunity of employment. So we are always looking at training opportunities for our employees and ways that we can add value to and increase our work force.

Our main office in Desborough had taken on some interns and found the experience to be incredibly rewarding for all parties involved. We had discussed the possibility in Wellington and got the encouragement and support from the main office to go ahead."

Caraline continues, "I approached Somerset College for two main reasons. The first being it's location to us and the second being confident in the knowledge that they could provide us with everything we needed for the internship to be a success.

We received Nicholas' CV and he came along for an interview just as someone applying for a full time post would. We were very impressed with the way he presented himself and were more than willing to take him on."

During his time at Rigid, Nicholas got to see all the elements of the business at work. He spent time with the Designers at the main Desborough site. He also worked on the factory floor of the Wellington site, as well as working with the engineers so that he could get a thorough understanding of the box manufacturing process.

Caraline says, "Not only did Nicolas get to enhance his practical but also his interpersonal skills as well. To work in an industry like this you have to be able to communicate with people on all levels. Liaising between administration, engineers and designers to ensure the best results for the business.

I really saw his confidence grow from the time he started with us to the time he finished. It was really great to see his personal growth.

The College gave great support and communication throughout the process. They were regularly contacting us for feedback and updates, our liaisons at the College even had tours of our facilities to give them a thorough understanding of what it is we do."

Caraline and Rigid are so pleased with how the internship went that they are now looking at other opportunities that Somerset College can offer them.

"We are now looking into a Level 3 engineering apprenticeship for one of our employees and also sending one of our engineers to the College for electrical installation training. We are also looking into distance learning opportunities as well. We are always happy to encourage training and upskilling within our work force.

Rigid would highly recommend using the College for finding people interested in working in industry. I know how the system works due to years of experience and the College was fantastic throughout the entire process."
