New Industry Skills Centre Launched

Somerset College has officially launched its new Industry Skills Centre, in an event that attracted business people from across the region.

The new centre is part of Somerset College’s on-going investment programme, which has seen £3 million spent on facilities since 2011. It incorporates a state-of-the-art automotive centre and a fully refurbished construction centre – making it a hub of vocational training in the South West.

To mark the formal opening of the Industry Skills Centre, Somerset College invited Heart of the South West LEP Chief Executive Chris Garcia to speak at a special launch event. Garcia shared his vision for growth in the region, saying that institutions like Somerset College had a crucial role in training the next generation of skilled professionals.

More than 40 guests came to take a look at the Industry Skills Centre, and were bowled over by its first-class facilities for students in the construction and automotive sectors. The construction centre, for example, features professional construction equipment and machinery to help students in the fields of plumbing, brickwork, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating.

Meanwhile, the automotive centre has 13 servicing bays, all equipped with the latest Snap-On tools. This makes it one of the largest garages in the Taunton area, and ensures Somerset College students have the opportunity to develop their skills in a professional, real-world environment.

Talking at the launch event, Somerset College’s Principal and Chief Executive, Rachel Davies, said: “This is an exciting moment for our College, because it marks the latest chapter in our ambitious investment programme. With first-rate facilities and highly experienced teaching staff, Somerset College is the place to come for professional training in the construction or automotive industries.”
