Apprentices at work on the track

On track for job opportunities

Young people with a passion for trains will have a chance to make their childhood dreams come true with a unique training opportunity offering excellent career prospects.

Somerset College in Taunton, working in partnership with national railway training organisation Silver Track Training and the West Somerset Railway, is offering a new round of Railway Engineering Apprenticeships for 16-18 year olds.

Somerset College is the only institution in the South West to offer the apprenticeships, giving people a fast track way of gaining an industry recognised qualification while being paid, with an opportunity for further higher level qualifications.

Now the College is holding a special Information and Recruitment day on October 7 for potential apprentices to book in and find out more. The day will be held at the Technology Centre on the College’s Wellington Road site, between 9am – 4pm, and would-be apprentices should ring 01823 366364 to book a slot.

Two previous Apprenticeship groups have now qualified, with good success rates in finding employment.

The Railway Engineering Apprenticeships include all statutory licenses and the NVQ Level 2 in Rail Track Operations, equipping learners with valuable work experience and opportunities to progress to higher level qualifications such as a Foundation Degree.
The Apprentices will be paid a wage of £60.00 per week plus a completion bonus of £260.00.
