Somerset College students present to Taunton Deane Council

Three Somerset College Arts and Design students gave presentations to Taunton Deane Borough Council on Thursday 14 April after they received a bursary from the local authority.

Hilary Wells, Natalie Parsley and Abigail Williams spoke to the council after they received bursaries that helped towards research for their dissertation.

The bursaries helped to provide travel costs for the students who visited places including Vienna, New York and Japan.

Natalie Parsley, who studies BA (Hons) Fine Art student and travelled to New York, said: ‘It was an invaluable trip, I wouldn't have been able to go without the bursary from Taunton Deane. It has benefited my dissertation and my studio work at the same time.'

BA (Hons) Fashion student Hilary Wells, who travelled to Tokyo, said: ‘I had an amazing experience. I wanted to find out how consumer culture had changed Japan from the old, traditional, country to become the modern day, technologically advanced, country we see today. Japan fascinates me, the architecture, people and fashions are wonderful.'

Mayor of Taunton, Cllr Tim Slattery, said: 'Following an invitation from Somerset College to view the exhibition on work undertaken by their students at the College I was so impressed with their experiences that I invited them to attend the next Full Council meeting and display their work and give a presentation.

'I wish all the students best wishes with their dissertations and future careers.'

Many of the students' final collection has been influenced by the research, including Hilary whose collection started off with drawings from her Japanese adventure. To see the students' final collections visit the College's Summer Degree Show from Monday 22 June.
