Special Graduation Event
A special event, arranged by Somerset College, took place in December for an overseas fashion graduate who was unable to attend the annual graduation celebration.
Nipa Yamjamnam, 28, is a profoundly deaf student who originally came to the United Kingdom in 2003. Nipa chose to study at Somerset College following the support that she received from the Thai Government as part of a dedicated scheme to help talented young people with disabilities. She initially learnt British Sign Language at the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education, before progressing onto Somerset College to study the BA HONS degree in Design (Fashion).
Nipa achieved the BA HONS degree earlier this year but was unable to attend the graduation celebration with her fellow graduates in October as her visa had expired. However to ensure that she didn’t miss out on the graduation experience, Somerset College arranged a special event for her on Wednesday 19 December. Nipa had the opportunity to wear the customary graduation gown and have her photo taken whilst being presented with her degree (as pictured).
The event was arranged and attended by Gary Mills, Fashion Lecturer at Somerset College who explains “Nipa is an inspiring and talented student who has overcome a number of challenges to achieve the BA Hons Fashion (Design). She was very disappointed not to be able to enjoy the graduation ceremony with her friends and fellow graduates, so we wanted to make sure that she still had a graduation experience.”
As well as the invaluable skills and knowledge that Nipa learnt whilst at Somerset College, she will now also have the memories and photos of her graduation day to take away with her.
