Students from Somerset College in Taunton have been forging links with Avonmouth Old Boys RFC, helping to give the Bristol based rugby club a fresh exterior – and with further plans to give its function room a makeover.
The students on the College’s Entry Programme for Foundation Learning, worked at the Club as a project to develop life skills and team work.
“The project demonstrated the hard work and commitment of these students, many of whom have additional needs, and it’s been a great opportunity for their coursework and development for employment,” said Alison Stokes, an Entry Programme Leader.
The team completely refurbished the club’s patio with hanging baskets, tubs and tables to brighten up the outside, while the function room will be next to undergo a makeover.
For Avonmouth Old Boys RFC it’s been an equally helpful partnership. Club chairman Steve Leyshon said: “We’ve undertaken a commitment to forge closer links with our community and getting the students involved at the club was a great opportunity.”
College Vice-Principal Jo Burford said: “Avonmouth Old Boys has provided the students with a wonderful chance to take on a real-life project which had to be delivered in a set time and to acceptable standards. This is a really positive collaboration and one we are keen to see continue.”
