Students don't just make the tea on placements with top companies

Somerset College students Abigail Williams and Mia Puzey spent time on a placement at two clothing giants on hectic but rewarding placements - Mia's even led to a job with New Look.

Mia took two placements at New Look whilst completing her BA (Hons) Fashion. Abigail, who studies BA (Hons) Fashion and Textiles, spent more than a month at Ted Baker.

Mia's work placement at New Look was organised through contacts at the College. She went on two placements to the clothing designer and retailer and was eventually offered a position in the company.

Mia said: ‘Somerset College have good contacts with New Look, and they managed to arrange my placement for me. I spent time, with the design, merchandising and buying teams, and in stores. It was an all-round education.

‘Whilst I was at the College I didn't realise what jobs are available in the wider world. Placements opened up my eyes to what was available out there.'

Mia now works as a garment technician at New Look where she checks the quality and fit of garments before they make their way to stores across the country.

Abigail spent time in various different parts of the company including e-commerce, press, merchandising and designing departments. She helped out at photo shoots, arranged threads for next season's colour-boards and helped design next season's clothes on Oxford Street in London.

Abigail said: ‘I worked hard throughout the placement and spent time in most departments, even helping out the design team on Oxford Street. I really enjoyed the experience as it gave me a good idea how a company like Ted Baker operates.

‘I had a really good time at Ted Baker, and might get a job there as I have kept in contact with the e-commerce manager. I even met Ted Baker himself at the Christmas party!'

Abigail is returning to Somerset College in September where she will complete her third year on the BA (Hons) Fashion and Textiles course. She has been awarded money from the College bursary scheme to study her thesis in Chicago.
