Students get to grips with equality and diversity

Over 400 students learnt about everything from equal opportunities to discrimination, when Somerset College in Taunton held a special day to launch its Equality and Diversity objectives.

Students were bowled over by speaker Trevor Gordon, of the London based Equality and Diversity consultancy, Gordon Ffrench Associates. A nationally known Education Management Consultant, and holder of a Stephen Lawrence Award for Education, he gave a talk and led discussion on all kinds of issues.

"Excellent, inspirational and motivational," was the students’ verdict.

The launch event aimed to raise awareness among students about all aspects of discrimination and equality, covering everything from age and race, to gender and disability.

The sounds of Pantasy Steel, a Steel Band from Bristol, were heard throughout the day and a variety of organisations also talked to students about their services, including Somerset Race Equality Council, Compass Disability, Terrance Higgins Trust, and others.
