Hilary Wells

Student's nominated for top awards at London Graduate Fashion Week

Somerset College fashion undergraduate Hilary Wells’ spectacular Tokyo themed collection was nominated for the River Island Gold Award at London Graduate Fashion Week this week.

BA (Hons) Fashion Undergraduate Hilary displayed her collection as part of the College’s own show on Tuesday 9 June. She was nominated to take part in the Gala Shows which took place later in the week.

Hilary’s creations were shown alongside the cream of the crop at London Graduate Fashion Week. She was also went to the after-show party with fashion designer Matthew Williamson and super models Claudia Schiffer and Erin O’Connor.

Hilary said: ‘It was such an amazing feeling to see my garments in the Gala Show, I was so excited to be nominated and really enjoyed the show. Our show was extremely well put together, and the garments looked fantastic on the catwalk. I also really enjoyed the after-show party and seeing Mathew Williams, Claudia Schiffer and Erin O’Connor.

‘London Graduate Fashion Week gave me the chance to see so many creative styles that I am able to take into employment once I finish my course.’

Hilary’s collection is influenced by the architectural reflections created in Tokyo’s urban metropolis. She was inspired by the way reflections distort perspectives and blur images, creating new and exciting shapes. She has created a 3-dimensional look that encases the body with a protective layer, just as a building would do.

BA (Hons) Fashion undergraduate Diana Matveeva was also nominated for the Zandra Rhodes Fashion Textiles Award at London Graduate Fashion Week. Her medieval inspired collection was also part of Somerset College’s show and included long flowing dresses with innovative prints.

Gary Mills, Fashion Tutor at Somerset College, said: ‘I am so proud of Hilary and Diana, their collections looked sensational during our show and it was no surprise that they were nominated by the judging panel for their awards.

‘All of our undergraduates have worked so hard to put together their collections, and they all looked stunning as they went down the catwalk. Although we are only a regional college outside London, we are proud to have our own show on the main catwalk with other major fashion institutions including London College of Fashion, Manchester Metropolitan and Northumbria Universities.

‘Year on year the students’ work looks ever more fabulous on the main catwalk. We have a proud history of winning major awards including the Visionary Knitwear award at London Graduate Fashion Week, Young Designer of the Year at Clothes Show Live and gold medals at EuroSkills.’

Nineteen students displayed their collections during the College’s show. It is the culmination of a year’s hard work and for many will lead to careers in the fashion industry. Last year’s graduates found jobs working for companies including New Look and Top Shop or started their businesses. Hilary has been offered a job as a trainee designer for David Howard designing shirts for amongst others Top Man, Next and New Look.
