Textiles undergraduate scoops regional award

Textiles undergraduate Jenni Nolan from Somerset College claimed second place in the regional heat of a global competition held by the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC).

BA (Hons) Interior Textiles and Surface Design undergraduate Jenni, from Frome, scooped second place in the SDC Global Design Competition having competed against entries from across the West Country including students from universities and colleges in Bath and Winchester.

Jenni said: ‘I was delighted to take part in this competition. It has helped to improve my confidence as a designer and given me experience of a pressure situation. The competition has given me professional skills that I will carry into employment.'

Jenni was required to submit designs demonstrating the use of colour as a primary design element and that incorporated sustainable thinking. Jenni had recently worked on a student project with a local company, Radical Homes, to design interiors and exteriors for old shipping containers that are being transformed into low cost, sustainable, housing. Her designs were inspired by Japan. Jenni installed a mezzanine level in the shipping container and hung a drawing of a flower between laminated glass panes, both of which were her interpretations of elements of Japanese design and culture.

Jenni's tutor, Neil Musson, said: ‘I am not surprised that Jenni's work was chosen to win this prestigious industry competition as we have a high calibre of undergraduates on our course.

‘Jenni's work is excellent, and she will be displaying her collection at the College's Arts & Design Degree and Diploma Show in June.'

This has been a successful year for Somerset College's Textiles and Fashion undergraduates including winning Gold medals at Euro Skills, textiles students have been highly commended by Art for Life at Musgrove hospital and the College had four out of the ten finalists for the Clothes Show Lives' Young Designer of the Year.
