Young artists and fashion designers take centre stage

Hello world – that’s the message from graduates and students at Somerset College in Taunton, who are currently taking part in both a major national fashion show and an international art contest this week.

Three recent university graduates from the College will show their designs at the top national fashion event, Clothes Show Live, being held at Birmingham’s NEC, (Dec 2 – 7) while three Fine Art students are competing by invitation in the Hans Brinker Trophy Exhibition in Amsterdam for one of the largest student prizes in Europe.

The recent fashion design graduates are Sophie Travella, Lauren Woodrow and Lucy Withecombe. Sophie and Lauren will each have a professionally modelled collection that will open the Graduate Catwalk Show, while Lucy’s work will be shown on the Red Carpet Designer Catwalk for celebrity inspired designer fashion.

Meanwhile three Fine Art degree students have been selected to show their work at the prestigious Hans Brinker Trophy Exhibition in Amsterdam, along with students from British, Belgian and Dutch art schools.

It is the first time students from the College have been invited to exhibit and Kristen Mercer, Charli Ford and Ruby Petts have spent weeks preparing.

“I’m really excited, it’s the first thing like this I’ve ever done, and it’s especially exciting to be showing in Europe,” said Kristen.

The winning painting will be voted for by a huge group of special guests and the prize will be Euros 5,000 and a possible studio place in Amsterdam.
