WorldSkills is the largest vocational skills competition in the world and attracts thousands of visitors. It takes place in different countries every two years and brings together over 1000 skills 'Olympians' to compete in 45 different categories - from bricklaying to web design, fashion technology to welding.
The UK hosted the 41st WorldSkills Competition in October 2011 at the ExCeL exhibition and conference centre in London's docklands. It involved 1,000 competitors from over 50 nations competing over four days.
Somerset College's Andrew Pengelly, Lecturer in Carpentry and Joinery, has been selected as Shop Master for Bench Joinery at the London WorldSkills event. Both Andrew and the College have been involved with SkillBuild for many years at regional and national level.

2011 was the eleventh consecutive year that Somerset College hosted the regional SkillBuild heat and students came from as far as Gloucestershire and Cornwall to take part at the day-long event on May 12.
SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices. It covers ten crafts including: Bricklaying, cabinet making, carpentry, dry walling systems, joinery, painting and decorating, plastering, roofing, stonemasonry, wall and floor tiling.
Success at the SkillBuild regional heats will give entrants the opportunity to challenge for a place on the WorldSkills UK team and progress to compete at the 2013 WorldSkills competition in Leipzig, Germany.
The national competition is run by ConstructionSkills with the endorsement of UK Skills, competition managers for the bi-annual WorldSkills competitions.

Somerset College held its first Skills Competition earlier in 2011 and the event is now set to become an annual highlight.
Over 35 competitions were held across the campus, aiming to create greater awareness of top level skills and encourage students’ awareness of regional and national competitions that can lead on to the international WorldSkills competitions.
