What our students say
Canonsgrove is in a lovely leafy part of Taunton, but it is a little out of town and although there are shops near by we often shop at the Tesco next to college before catching the bus back home. We also car share. The bus doesn?t run after 5.30pm or on Sunday, so for a night out in town the best way is to all pile into a taxi and share the fare.
All the facilities you need on hand and I definitely think that if you are new to the area, staying in Halls for at least your first year is a good idea. You get to meet so many people before you need to go and rent a place. It is much better to have made friends in the first year who you know you want to share with in the following years!
Last summer a group of us who live in Halls bought a paddling pool and we used the barbecue area with its garden benches to throw loads of summer parties. I am in my final year and I love living in halls.
Gemma Williams, 2nd year FdA Media Make-up
As soon as I set eyes on Somerset College I felt comfortable. It wasn?t anything like as daunting as other places I had been to. When I looked at a room in the Halls of Residence I could easily imagine all my things in there and it felt right. I love having my own bathroom and was delighted at how affordable the accommodation was compared to other places.
I am from a rural area and not used to having many people around, so I was nervous about living at Canonsgrove Halls and meeting new people. It has been so much better than I expected and really brought me out of myself. I have made lots of friends ? the kitchen in my flat seems to be the hub of all activity. We meet up in the kitchen every evening for supper, to watch TV together and gossip. The bar is great too ? we had a brilliant Halloween party and during Freshers? week we had different events going on every day.
The student wardens are very helpful and really made a difference when I was settling in. On our first night they made sure everyone went to the bar to meet each other which was really important to build our confidence and help us make friends. I want to be a warden in my 2nd year so I can share my experiences and help others feel comfortable when they come and live here.
Thursdays are student night in Taunton. We usually start in the kitchen then gravitate towards the Canonsgrove bar and then bundle into taxis to go to a Taunton nightclub. The shops in Taunton are good too ? all the one?s you would expect plus some lovely quirky little shops.
