Robert Kennedy, BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles
I have dyslexia and could have found the coursework at degree level very difficult, but I get fantastic support from my Learning Support tutor. She has been a great help to me on a day-to-day basis particularly when I have to write my assignments.
Being a student is expensive so I never thought I could afford special equipment to help me with my dyslexia, but I was advised to apply for a Disabled Student?s Allowance, which is a grant that has helped me get voice recognition software, a Dictaphone, a computer with all additional hardware and pay for someone to take notes in class for me. How amazing is that! I am so glad that there are people here at Somerset College who can give you good advice like this.
I?m only in my first year but already the course exceeds my expectations. It seems to be tailored to suit me personally! We?ve already had a wonderful trip to Paris to get inspiration from the museums and we?ve had some great project assignments.
The tutors are more like friends and occasionally we all go out together. Because everyone is very friendly it makes it very easy to ask for help if you have a problem.

I came to Somerset College first of all to do a National Diploma in 3D Design and Media Make-up. I made lots of friends in the area and wanted to stay, so the Foundation Degree was a good next step for me.
I have dyslexia and when I started here I had a re-assessment which was very useful. As a result I was allocated a Learning Support Tutor, who is wonderful. I now get help with writing and research and it makes a big difference. The College has also provided me with a computer and specialist software to help with my coursework. I would recommend Somerset College to anyone who has dyslexia as there is plenty of help and understanding available.
The course is really broad-based and you get to do lots of different things including make-up for fashion, TV and film plus wigmaking, hairdressing and special effects make-up. I have found that I like wigmaking most of all. It is great to be taught by lecturers who have real experience of working in the industry.
I prefer practical work to written work so a career like this will suit me really well. I am excited about it and hope to meet lots of interesting, and maybe some famous people.
