Somerset College

Student Services - Supporting your Learning

Tutorial support

While you are at Somerset College your Personal Tutor will meet with you every week for a 1.5hr tutorial session. Your Personal Tutor is responsible for monitoring your progress on your course and your general welfare. Some of your tutorials will be one-to-one and some will be with other students.

Your Personal Tutor will work closely with you to build your Individual Learning Plan (ILP), reviewing and recording your progress and achievements and helping you map out your future.

One-to-one tutorials

If you have any problems about any aspect of your studies you can get confidential, advice from your Personal Tutor. You will get the opportunity to discuss your course and any aspects of it that are troubling you as well as be expected to think about your future and what steps you need to take to achieve your goals.

Your ILP

An ILP is a record of your progress on your course. It contains details of your qualifications to date, discussions you have had with your tutor about your learning, your acheivements, your career ideas, career action plan and your attendence records. It is a shared report on anything to do with your time at Somerset College.

Group tutorials

Some of your tutorials will be with a larger group of students and these sessions focus on your welfare and your personal and social skills. Group tutorials focus on subjects such as sexual health, drug and alcohol advice and financial skills and often link into themed weeks or days run by the College such as World Aids Day, National Stop Smoking Day, One World Week, European Citizenship and the annual Freshers Fair for new students.

Student life

Working alongside the Student Union, we work hard to make your time here as rewarding and diverse as possible. Our Enrichement Team develop themed weeks and days throughout the year that include live bands, food tastings, demonstrations and presentations.

You will also be able to take part in a number of activities and trips that relate directly to the course you are on such as industrial visits, trips to tradeshows and exhibitions and visits abroad.
