Your First Home in Taunton

Living in on-site accommodation is a brilliant way of meeting new friends and gaining confidence and independence. For the majority of our students this will be their first time away from home and we will therefore make every effort to support students in their transition and make their experience as easy as possible.

Part of the Student Union and a rep are located on-site to arrange a diverse selection of events.

Situated on the edge of Taunton, just two and a half miles from College, Halls of Residence is a great place to live.

Each flat consists of six or seven study bedrooms, sharing a well equipped kitchen/diner. Each bedroom is en-suite and furnished with a single bed, bedside table with lamp, wardrobe, desk, chair, curtains, bookcase and has broadband wireless facility for your laptop (PC or Mac).

  • Comfortable en-suite study rooms: 7 rooms per flat with shared kitchen area
  • Inclusive of Bills: gas electric and water, personal possessions insurance and wi-fi
  • 24 hour support team including student wardens, staff and on-call maintenance

Somerset College Room Tariff 2016/17:
B Room £4410 (£105 per week)
A Room £4914 (£117 per week)
A* Room £5418 (£129 per week)

Room rental charges are based on a 42-week year for Higher Education students (43 weeks for Further Education students) and is inclusive of all bills (gas, electricity and water rates), personal possessions insurance and internet access.

Full-time Higher Education students living in Halls of Residence are exempt from paying Council Tax.

Somerset remains one of the most stunning and varied of counties. It offers spectacular scenery, a rich cultural life, busy shopping centres and lively social life including clubs, restaurants and pubs, cinemas and bowling alley. There are also a range of interesting tourist spots all within easy reach. Taunton has easy access to train, bus links and motorways to London, the Midlands and Wales. It is approximately one hour's drive from Bristol and Exeter airports.

The halls have a varied calendar of social events, from sporting events to party nights. You will be kept well up-to-date with all up and coming events.

Travelling between Halls and College

There is a bus stop directly outside the Halls of Residence, with buses running regularly throughout the day. It is a thirteen minute bus ride to College or a twenty minute cycle ride. There are cycle racks available at Halls and on campus. Taxi's are also available.

Car Parking

Parking is free but spaces are limited.

All vehicles are left at your own risk. You must take out appropriate insurance as the College will not cover any loss or damage. Please note bicycles are not allowed in any Halls’ buildings. If found, they will be removed and placed in the cycle racks provided for your use.

Applying for a Room

When you have accepted an offer of a place and know you will need somewhere to live in Taunton, you can apply for a room at our Halls of Residence. Please complete the application form and return it to us by email or in the post. Email accommodation@somerset.ac.uk or return your form to Accommodation Office, Somerset College, Wellington Road, Taunton TA1 5AX.
