The Benefits of Employing an Apprentice
Apprenticeships are growing and, with more than 250,000 workplaces with an apprentice in 2014/15, its worthwhile looking at why they are increasingly popular.
89% of employers reported that apprenticeships helped their business improve the quality of their product or service; apprenticeships boost productivity to businesses by, on average, £214 per week.
Dolphins Childcare in North Petherton currently have three apprentices with us, and have just been shortlisted for a Grow Somerset Talent Award. We caught up with Diane and Sharon who are the managers at Dolphins Childcare, and spoke to them about how apprenticeships have benefitted their company:
"Apprentices Gain Qualifications as well as Experience"
“Apprenticeships offer you the chance to mould your staff to fit into how your business works. They gain qualifications as well as experience which is what all companies are looking for. Our apprentices are very valuable members of staff as they can see the greater prospects by gaining the experience that you can’t get on a college course.
“We have three apprentices, each in their own classroom, and they are all treated as full members of staff so they get a true picture of the working environment. None of our apprentices are here to do menial jobs but are trained and treated as permanent members of staff.
“Working with Somerset College has been brilliant. They are very supportive and they have really got to know our business and offered us ideal candidates for our vacancies. Every student we have had feels that they are totally supported and involved. It’s been a real team effort.
“If you want to learn the job properly you need to be in the environment. You can sit and listen to someone tell you how, but learning on the job not only helps you gain the qualification but gives you a 100% better understanding of what the job requires. It is everything an employer could want.”
We want to wish Diane and Sharon the best of luck with the awards on Friday!
