  • Who is this course for?

    This part-time course requires attendance at college for one day per week. The course is designed for those already working in mechanical engineering and looking to develop their career after successfully completing their HNC course. Learners study in new, state of the art engineering facilities and supported by a team of experienced professionals.
  • Course Description

    Mechanical engineers research, develop and manage projects devising innovative solutions in design and manufacture. Graduates find roles within industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy and water. The course is designed to provide the knowledge and understanding of how advanced and innovative engineering underpins the mechanical design, advanced manufacturing and technical service areas of the industry. This course can also form the academic part of a Higher Apprenticeship.

    The course builds on the units completed during an HNC programme to ‘top-up’ to a level 5 qualification. The course includes the following units:

    • Business Management Techniques
    • Quality Assurance
    • Quality and Business Improvement
    • Managing People
    • Managing Individual and Teams
    • Design for Manufacture
    • Health, Safety & Risk Assessment

    This course runs one day a week for the whole academic year. 

    Learners attend College for one full day a week and will be expected to complete written assignment work in self-study time at home.

    You will learn through a combination of lectures, directed study, assignment work, practical exercises and the completion of a work-based project relevant to your employment. 

    This course focuses on the management side of the engineering industry and adopts some strong working principles. All elements of the HND are delivered by staff with strong academic and industrial experience.

  • Teaching and Assessment

    Assessment will be via assignments. Continuous assessment of learner performance is carried out by means of assignments and may include verbal presentations, projects, group-work, practical exercises, written reports and integrative assignments that link various subject areas.

  • Progression Opportunities

    You can look for work in a broad range of engineering occupations in engineering systems, mechanical engineering or engineering maintenance or project leader in industry.

    Many graduates from the HND course have gone on to study at degree level or have secured higher positions within their companies as mechanical engineers, managers and project team leaders.

  • Entry Requirements

    This is a one-year top-up following the successful completion of an HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

    Students will progress onto this course having studied one of the current HNC Engineering programmes within University Centre Somerset’s Engineering department. HNCs awarded by other institutions will also be considered.

    Applicants who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, can demonstrate a capability of English at a standard commensurate with IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections.
