Business Management HND

Course Overview

This course runs over two days per week; one day at the Bridgwater campus plus one day of online study.

The HND in Business Management provides a wide-ranging study of the business sector and is designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in business. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the business sector it will prepare you for further study or training.

You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

During the first year students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the business sector through six core units, which include one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment.

Units may include:

  • Business and the Business Environment
  • Marketing Essentials
  • Human Resource Management
  • Management and Operations
  • Management Accounting
  • Managing a Successful Business Project (Pearson-set unit).

Progressing on to the second year will ensure you develop a sound understanding of the principles in the study of Management and you will learn how to apply those principles more widely. You will evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. You will be able to perform effectively in your chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

The core units may include:

  • Organisational Behaviour
  • Operations and Project Management
  • Understanding and Leading Change
  • Global Business Environment

Lecturer Spotlight

Andrew Murray-Smith

Andrew is a Business Course Leader and has worked at Bridgwater & Taunton College for several years. His qualifications include a Business and Finance HND and a postgraduate certificate in Management. His work experience includes managing large European-funded projects, working for Bristol City Council in a Project Development role and managing several youth-based projects.

Assessment

Assessment Methods

The course runs over two days per week; you will be required to attend UCS one day per week and you must also be able to commit to one full day of online study per week. Assessment methods are assignment-based, both in class and online. We are able to offer the delivery of HND Business Management through HN Online. HN Online allows for bespoke online delivery of many units and ensures you a quality learning experience combined with a flexible approach to teaching learning and assessment. 

Entry Requirements and Progression

Progression

On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business Management you will be able to develop you career in the business sector through entering employment or advancement in existing employment and/or progressing onto a top-up degree course. Employment opportunities include roles within the fields of Accounting and Finance, Business Management, Human Resources, Marketing, Operations Management and Retail.

Entry Requirements

Typically entrants will possess:

  • A related Level 3 qualification such as Level 3 in Business
  • or three A Level passes in related subjects
  • or an Access to HE Diploma.

Entry will also be subject to an interview.

Fees

The fee for 2023/24 entry to this course is £7,800* per academic year of study.

The fee for 2024/25 entry to this course will be set during Spring 2024.
