This Certificate in Education degree, accredited by the University of Plymouth and embedded within our Level 6/7 PGCE provision, is designed for those wanting to get into teaching, who do not hold currently hold a degree. This route is specifically for teaching in Further Education colleges, adult and community education, work-based training, offender learning and public sector organisations. The Cert Ed programme helps develop the required skills, knowledge, and professional values for working in the above educational sectors and, with a large proportion of time spent on placement, there will be the chance to gain real-world experience, preparing you for a fulfilling and rewarding career in education. After completing this course you'll have the option to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.
Core modules may include:
Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DLLS490) This module addresses processes, principles, and theories of planning, preparing, and enabling learning. It critically examines theories, principles and processes of assessment such as inclusive assessment practices. It critically investigates key aspects of the roles and responsibilities of teachers, trainers, and tutors in this sector.
Theories of Learning and Behaviour Management (DLLS581) This module allows you to critically examine the relationship between the theories and principles of learning and behaviour management. You will apply these theoretical ideas to a range of scenarios and typical encountered behaviours inherent to your own professional practice.
Curriculum and Society (DLLS579) This module critically explores curriculum theories, principles and ideologies and social, economic, political, and cultural differences affecting inclusive curriculum design, equality and diversity and education for sustainable development. It enables reflexive evaluation of individual subject specialisms in relation to inclusive curriculum design.
Wider Practice and Professional Development (DLLS580) This module focuses upon notions of professionalism and wider professional practice enabling critical examination of professional conduct, accountability, quality assurance and improvement, and the wider context of teaching. Completion of the course could lead to full-time or part-time employment in the Further Education or Skills sectors.
Academic requirements:
•Relevant Level 3 qualification in a chosen specialist subject area
•English and maths qualifications at Level 2 (e.g. GCSE grade 4; grade C or equivalent of Functional Skills Level 2)
•Good information and communications technology (ICT) skills.
Applicants with overseas qualifications can check their compatibility with the UK equivalent through UK ECCTIS (or ENIC), who provide an advisory service. Please note that a “statement of comparability” will be required for application consideration/course enrolment.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, we’ll need evidence of your proficiency in English as follows:
•IELTS 7.0 overall with 7.0 in all four elements, or accepted equivalent English qualification as listed on the University of Plymouth’s website.
You’ll normally be pre-service and your entry on to the programme will be conditional upon a suitable placement and mentor in the subject specialism being arranged. BTC/UCS will facilitate in finding and arranging placements wherever possible.
Non-academic requirements
•You’ll be required to complete a satisfactory enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) Enhanced Disclosure and complete a criminal convictions self-declaration form
•You must be deemed fit to teach.

An interview is a pre-requisite for entry onto this programme.
There is a two-stage interview process for this course. The first stage is conducted by a member of the teaching team and if successful there will be a second interview with a subject specialist tutor from the placement college. This interview is to ascertain your level of subject knowledge in the areas that you might reasonably be expected to deliver whilst on your teaching placement.
The course fee is £4250.00* per year of study.
