Apprenticeships at Somerset College
Bradley Gunn joined Somerset College to study a Level 4 Apprenticeship in IT and Telecoms after completing his Level 3 elsewhere.
Bradley says, “I really enjoy working and studying at Somerset College because I have responsibility for lots of different projects, whereas previously I was in a job which mainly involved repetitive work such as database management and troubleshooting.
At Somerset College it isn’t the same thing every day; once I’ve completed one project I quickly move onto the next and it is constantly evolving with a quick turnover of work. I feel I have learnt so much in my time here – when I go back to expand my earlier projects I can see how the level of my skill has increased over time.
I’ve learnt so much both in academic and practical terms which will put me in a great position in the world of work. When you are a programmer, there are lots of different ‘languages’ to learn and this takes time and practice. Because I am able to use what I’m learning in real-life situations straight away, I am retaining all the information and increasing my knowledge at the same time.
I work in the office from Monday to Thursday and then I attend College on Friday – I enjoy fitting the working and learning around each other and find that I am able to easily manage my time. It is such an effective gateway into my chosen career, because every job that I am aiming for requires at least 3 to 4 years of experience plus the relevant qualifications. I am gaining both of these essential assets at the same time, so when I qualify I can really hit the ground running.”
