Award-Winning students show designs at Free Range
The higher education college from Somerset renowned for its award-winning stable of Arts and Design students is going urban at Free Range, the Graduate Fashion Show taking place in Brick Lane on 4 June.
Somerset College, boasting two out of four finalists in last year’s Euro Skills UK competition, will be showing all their final year students’ designs for London’s media and public to see.
‘We promote individuality in our students and give them a sense of permission,’ Gary Mills, Lecturer BA (Hons) Design Fashion, said. ‘That’s why this end of year show for us is a culmination of fine couture, tailoring and outright fetishism.’
Designs on the catwalk will be by students like Hana Schofield who won the WorldSkills UK ’09 Bronze medal and People’s Choice award, hosted at Graduate Fashion Week ’09. Hana’s work, themed ‘Growth and Decay’ is based on organic architecture and asymmetrical forms.
Richard Maynes, finalist for both World Skills and Fashion Awareness Direct ’09, Bronze award-winner at UK Skills ’08, and recently appointed judge for the UK Skills ’10 contest, is showing his collection as well. Called ‘The Digital Dark Age’ Richard’s collection is a look into the future. Richard said: ‘Somerset College has only ever been encouraging and has not held me back in any way. In fact, I’ve been pushed to be as creative as possible.’
Somerset College students will be showing their fashions during Free Range Fashion Week, on 4 June, 4 Block G1, The Old Truman Brewery, Hanbury Street, London E1.
