College students on the ball at local rounders league
Students from Somerset College have given up their time to help run a local rounders league.
The girls volunteered to organise teams and umpire matches in the Taunton Mixed Rounders League project to help complement their studies in exercise and sports science.
Taking place over eight weeks in the summer, the Mixed Rounders League involves 22 teams and is a major event in Taunton’s sporting calendar. It is organised by the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP), which has a track record of working in partnership with Somerset College.
SASP’s Sports Development Manager Rebecca Squire said of the girls: “They have been really reliable, and weren’t intimidated by umpiring adults. They have really added value to our social participation programme.”
Thanks to their success this year, the students have already been invited to help with the 2014 rounders league. Meanwhile, they have a chance to attend umpire training over the winter and gain a National Governing Body qualification.
