Exciting new and unique courses on offer at Somerset College
This September will see new, exciting and unique courses on offer at Somerset College including new Diplomas, a new FdA Interior Spatial Design programme, and the launch of a fast track accounting course.
The new diplomas are the Government’s latest flagship courses for 14-19 year olds. They will allow students to gain valuable experience in the industry they want to work in. The diplomas have been designed to give students the best possible chance of finding a place in university or employment. The new Diploma qualification will be offered by the Taunton Deane and West Somerset Consortium. They have been designed with the help of employers and universities in order to ensure the student’s needs are at the heart of the qualification.
Jocelyn Prichard, Consortium Co-ordinator for Taunton Deane and West Somerset Consortium, said: ‘These brand new Diplomas are unlike any other course available. They include a unique mixture of class work and applied learning, which is perfect for each student as they gain the skills they need. The Consortium is a really exciting partnership which fosters collaboration by learning providers in the best interests of the students.’
Students who study the new Diploma will be able to spend at least ten days per year gaining experience with top employers during work experience.
As part of the Taunton Deane and West Somerset Consortium, Somerset College will offer four strands of the Diploma - Hair and Beauty Studies, Creative and Media, Engineering and Business Administration and Finance. From September 2010 the college will be offering ten Diplomas.
Taunton Deane and West Somerset Consortium includes all the secondary schools in Taunton Deane, Somerset College, Richard Huish College, West Somerset Community College and Connexions.
The College have also created an innovative Foundation Degree in Interior Spatial Design which gives students the necessary skills to become an interior designer in either a design agency or architectural practice.
Undergraduates who enrol on this course will be taught by professional designers who have just finished working in industry.
Head of Textiles and Fashion, Imelda Hughes, said: ‘Anyone who enrols on this course will receive the best possible start to their career. The tutors who will run this course were still working in industry this year, so they certainly know their stuff.’
The degree is the first of its kind in Somerset, and students will get the chance to take the BA (Hons) Design (Interior Textiles and Surface Design) or enter employment once they complete their course.
The College have also launched a unique fast track accounting course. The innovative AAT Certificate in Accounting Fast Track course will allow students to complete the course within 16 weeks compared to one year on the non fast track course.
This special programme has been designed for those who are considering a career in accounting or to improve their book-keeping skills. It will enable students to become qualified very quickly.
Simon Cook, Head of Service Industries at Somerset College, said: ‘This course allows us to offer a much faster route to students which enable them to become qualified and top up their skills quickly. They will learn everything that is in the AAT Certificate in Accounting course, but in a far more concentrated period. ‘
Somerset College offers more than 300 further education, degree and part time courses. For further information on a course email firstname.lastname@example.org, or contact (01823) 366 331.
